This was not on my bucket list. In fact, it was pretty close to the top of my “Never in a Million Years” list. I love fall in Kansas City—the pumpkin patches and apple cider donuts, bonfires and jewel-toned leaves. I love the Chiefs, and the way the whole city goes red for game days. I also love our generally mild winters, and knowing that sunshine and 50 degrees are only days away. Perfectly happy right where I am, thank you.
I also love my husband, and he desperately needed to change jobs. And so he did. And we, for a short time at least, are about to become residents of Alaska. Yep—that Alaska. Negative 50 degrees Alaska. 28 feet of snow Alaska. 6 months of darkness Alaska. Home of black, brown and grizzly bears Alaska.
But we get to live with our youngest daughter, Aubrey, who, like her dad, is an aircraft mechanic and will be working at the same company in Fairbanks. She bought a house on the side of a mountain and invited us (and our two dogs) to share it with her—and her housemates, Bre and Guyadin, and eight dogs, two cats and a ferret.
And so the adventure begins. First the road trip: Eight days and seven nights, three vehicles, eleven dogs, two cats, and a ferret. (“Let’s move to Alaska” he said. “It’ll be fun!”, he said.) What could go wrong??
Yukon Ho!
As time passes and I look back at some of the challenges I realized they were all part of What was needed to help me see how lucky I am to have had such a full life!
